The Health White Paper published on 12th July 2010 revealed significant changes to the NHS structure. A key aspect of that change was the control of NHS budgets by GPs and abolition of PCTs. This is due to take effect in 2012/2013. The White Paper specifically states that the government will not bail out underperforming GP practices and that GPs will be held to account by their consortia. This is a significant change and will require GP practices to reform their ways of working.
With all of the changes that you will need make, let prescribing be the least of your worries. It is so important to control your practice’s prescribing habits and to develop a formulary early so that it doesn’t adversely affect your budgetary position in 2012/2013.
